Secrets of my marriage

Marriage is really a beautiful thing.

It tries your heart and head and pushes you far.

Well, at least it does for me.

I have had a few conversations this week that go something like this:

misc persons: "I just admire your relationship."

"You two are so good about doing things together"

"I love that you put your marriage as a priority."

" I told my husband he should have married someone like you because you are always doing cut things for your husband"

"You two get along so well! I wish we were more like that!"

"I've noticed that you two do a lot of things on your own. I want that too!"

...etc, etc, etc

But let me tell you a secret. Its hard. Although, it is pretty easy too. Especially with places online to help. Most things I do are "click and print" from other really dedicated wives. Sometimes I need to give myself pep-talks. Like when I decide to embark on the 12 lays of Christmas . Or when birthdays come along and for 7 days I give gifts of love or time etc. But do I feel guilty that sometimes I have to "talk myself into it?" Nope. I think it is a natural thing. And with the more ladies that come and talk to me about their marriages and books that I read, it enforces this thought.

I have been fortunate enough to be asked to contribute to as a guest blogger to the Dating Divas. I also have a separate blog of mine where I keep ideas that I have actually done. Or want to do... and then came Pinterest. So mostly ideas go there now. And that really has helped me so much! So I figure I can do something once a week. A date. A note. A little unexpected passion-play. Or just making his favorite dinner.

My marriage is so important to me. These last (almost) 5 years has taught me so much. Actually, I remember thinking a few months after I got married that I made a big mistake. Now keep in mind I was

1-newly married.

2-pregnant

3-moved into a house in a state and city I had never been to before.

4-had no other friends.

5-hubby had been traveling for work a lot.

6-couldn't find a job

7-had a lot of red tape w my transferring credits etc for school

I know. A lot to deal with and for some reason I thought it was because I made a mistake and God was punishing me. Hello! What was I thinking!!! I am actually really embarrassed to even think about those early months.

But he was ever patient. He was kind. Soft-spoken. And after a few days and some really good cries and gallons of ice cream, I was blissfully happy again. But I mention it only because it taught me a few things. I learned that life is life. It is what it is. And I made a choice. I feel blessed because of my choice but now when it gets hard and I get mad as a bee, I remember that I made this choice and I want my marriage to be admired. To be thought of. To be treasured. Not by the world. But by me and my husband.

In 30 years when we are old and grey hopefully serving missions together, I want to be that "cute old couple" people smile at and strive to be. But I also know that it does not happen overnight. So we both have our own hobbies that we do individuality or try to teach each other about and thankfully one of those hobbies is us. (i know, mushy-gooey-post)

One thing we still laugh about regarding Brandon is that he taught our little girl to laugh. I mean, laugh in a different way. Like Santa-meet-evil-mad-scientist-way. Bwa-hahahohohoho..... well you get the point. Brandon has so many endearing qualities. And we have noticed he tends to be a peacemaker. We have only known him for a few years but love having him around. And... thanks for your prayer this summer on the lake to get our boat to start!

Awkward Thursday

1. Hot flashes. For real?!
2. Calling a place a business about fishing:
Me: Hello?
Man: "How you doing?" (In a very Joey from Freinds voice)
Me: Thinking...surely I didn't dial a naughty number! "Uhm... I'd like to make a fishing appt please?"
Man: OH! I'm sorry, thought you were my wife.....

....insert awkward silence.....

3. Having to pull out every single item at Target and explain to the teller that yes, what is in my hand is the same thing in the coupon. Yes, I know the picture is different but can you please READ the description.
4. Lasy at Party City telling me that my baby is coming in a week, not in 7 weeks, Because she "just knows these kinds of things..." Hmmm... right.....

Awesome:
1. All the rain we got recently. Minus the flash floods and tornado warnings.
2. Getting a text at 1:45am "Just so you know, he kissed me!" And yes, I did appreciate that. It made me smile all day.
3. Seeing these little guys in pictures. They live in Hawaii so I probably won't see them in person for a while
4. The Chiropractor. My OB/GYN recommended me going. Apparently it was a shock to the D.C that she did. Guess it's not too common. But I've spent this whole week pain-free! Oh miracles of miracles!

Shelby has been doing colleges lately and since copying is the highest form of flattery.... well, you know.

I really have been lovin' the 365 day challenge.

And I have been fallin' in love with my little Nikon D40 all over again.

I feel like I am learning something new everyday as I try a new technique or editing tool.

Anyhow, taking it from the top (LtoR)

1. Cleaning out the closets. {due to nesting i think}. found these which make great anchors for forts

2. $1 ABC blocks. Been really loving these. Keo is the baby boys name. I think.

3. Me at 32 weeks and off to dinner.

4. A weed in my walkway I have seen every day for two weeks and have yet to pull.. Its quite pretty.

5. Glowstick bath. Thank you Pinterest. Its sorta awesome.

6. My love in the mail via Camera Coats.

7. 33 weeks and my new maternity/nursing dress. Got LOTS of compliments today at church. Is it wrong I want to wear it everyday and night. Because yes, it is that comfy.

8. Homemade whip cream into buttermilk into butter. I'll take two please!

9. Had a little photo shoot with the toddler yesterday. Makes my heart smile.

Awkward:

1. Making a return for a baby item at Target the same day I bought. Yes, Ma'am, that was just bought 2 hours ago. I thought about and I know it is $2 but I really don't NEED it.

2. Finally got the laundry out of the dryer. And dumped it on the bed. Too bad I did laundry on Saturday and I haven't made much progress.

3. Spinning class=reason why I was so sore and even a bit swollen down 'undah. (Took me a bit to put that together in my pregnancy-much brain)

4. I know I look like I should like I understand your rapid Spanish, but I don't. I have no idea what you are saying in fact. Like, at all.

5. (not awkward, just bummer) My free sewing machine broke. Found one at 4:30am this morning on Woot.com. It was one of those really amazing ones that even make you breakfast for $150. By the time I logged in to buy it they were ALL GONE! I had big dreams for me and you oh sewing machine. Big dreams.

Awesome:

1. Little sister made me an auntie last night. Twin boys. A 5-pounder and a 7-pounder. Pretty sure she is a rockstar. And pretty sure she will be tired every minute of her life for the next 20 years.

2. A text from a friend letting me know she wants to give me a baby shower. Really thoughtful. Was not expecting nor planning on one since this is my second kidlet. Registry found here

3. Getting all sorts of things taken care of with my beautiful body before baby deux arrives.

4. Dinner with my family and my friend Brad. Hopefully next time his family can come down to Houston from Montana.

5. New Years Resolution: So far 100% . It feels pretty awesome. Please people, hold your applause

I {heart} baby showers

Well, any reason for getting together actually. And today was no exception. A few ladies decided to have a baby shower for one of our sweet friends who is having her first. It was a yummy breakfast shower (started at 9am). Which while you may be thinking "9am! Thats so early!" It was kinda awesome to have the whole day still when all was said and done. And there are so many ladies who pitched in to help. Thank you girls!

oh, did I mention that almost half of us are expecting that were in attendance? The one on the very far end is my work out partner. I could go on and on about these gals pictured as well as the ones not and talk about how delightful, caring and truly Christ-centered their lives on. I'll just sum it up and say that I am lucky to have lots of women I admire in my life

Friday the 13th oh my

Today is my Grandpa's funeral. We were sad not to be in CA with everyone else but little sister got engaged on Christmas day so it was either the wedding in June or the funeral. Too bad we are not millionaires but it has been an interesting week nonetheless. And when I realized the funeral was going to be on Friday the 13th, I just laughed because I know that my Papa would have some quick-witted remark to that. Above all, I am thankful for the Gospel plan. I did hear this song: The Robe by Mercy River today on Pandora. My heart felt like it soared right our of chest and into the heavens. When it is my time to go, I want it played at my funeral. And, no, I am not thinking I am going to die anytime in the 100 years. Its just an incredibly beautiful song.

Hubbs is so diligent about this. Every. Day. 30 minutes. Rockstar.

Why yes, those are $1 tree thumbtacks. The gold and gaudy kind.

Measuring in at 30 weeks. Weight gain 34lbs which the nurse was really happy about.

...and got a referral for that crazy back mystery to get checked out.

I do have to mention, I took this w 1) no flash 2) using my remote 3)as part of my 365 days project

My Grandpa passed away yesterday. Peacefully. I was told even with a smile on his face. Here he is a few years ago with my little sister. The one expecting twins in a week. I thought of how her baby boys and our little boy are getting a chance to talk with Grandpa or "PAPA" as he is known.

One of my most favorite memories is of him getting me down from a very high place in the barn that I was stuck in. I also was not supposed to be even being the barn but if you know me or my siblings growing up, (or now) we don't listen so good. Well, at least I don't.

My heart is very full. And sad. Like I said, lots of emotions. I am thankful for his service in the War, for his always fulfilling his duty as a father, and grandfather and follower of Christ. And because of that, my parents raised me as a follower of Christ. And that can never be repaid.

365 day project

Oh New Year Resolutions...
... what would my life be without you? Probably guilt free :)

Actually, this year we (meaning the hubbs and I, not just me) sat down and made some really good goals/bucket lists for 2012. One of mine is the 365 day project. Yep, it is what it sounds like. A picture every day for a year.

Recently I took some photos I was not happy happy with. In fact, I was quite embarrassed at how grainy and dark they came out. I was shocked beyond shocked... so, really shocked. I really want to learn more about how my camera works. I also realized that I take lots of pictures of other people. Not so much of my own family. Think: The plumber who won't fin his own toilet. That would about sum it up.

This is is going to be a big one. I just don't want to miss a thing. Here is to 2012 and all of its promises.

... and Christmas clearance at Target will bring in new cheer.... next year that is.
And hopefully I will get around to making the tree skirt, advent calendar, and Christmas Pillows I have had in mind for the last 4 years. But no promises. In the meantime, here is a little re-cap of our Christmas this year. Which, I might add, is our first in 4 years on our own.

We went to the Nutcracker at the Houston Ballet

Yes, we did get pictures with Sara, or Mrs. Sara as J says

She is a beautiful dancer and person. She had so many people to take pictures with and never once did her genuine love faulter. I am sure she was very tired but throughout the whole remainder of the evening with pictures and taking us backstage she was nothing but kind and generous. I have learned a lot from her over the almost 2 years I have known her. And the one quality that really stands out is how loving she is to everyone around her. Thank you for a very special evening!

During intermission a few characters came out. J ran right up to the front (no matter there was a line) and about tackled this rat! Good thing it had great balance or it would have toppled! And good thing no one seemed to mind that she cut.

A family tradition that was before I graced this world is Gingerbread houses. Every year growing up we set aside a night to make real gingerbread houses and then we would take them to our school class. I am not as good as my mom and this came from Sams Club. But we had a blast with the Farleys and Larsens making these. J did most of the decorating by herself. I am pretty sure her brain works like her daddy. So precise!

Christmas Eve was spent at home. Most of all the day. And I loved loved loved! We watched movies, napped, ate red oreos, played with chalk, and managed to stay dry and warm. It was a perfect Christmas Eve

10 more weeks to go. So far I have put on 30 lbs.This little guy is gonna be a big baby like his sister!

I had seen this setup before and really wanted to try it out. It took about a dozen tries to get this... and lots of bribery.

We loved exchanging gifts, skyping, and daddy's Christmas Breakfast. We are looking forward to many years of new traditions together... like painting our nails and making reindeer shirts

I really was dragging my feet on the Pintrest bandwagon. But I just about all but stopped using FB. I had WAY TOO MANY subscriptions in my Google reader. And my list of things I want to make was just getting a bit long and overwhelming. blah blah blah....

Awkward:
-I was at the gym using the lat machine. Suddenly, I hear the trainer come up and tell me that I am sitting in it backwards.
-The toddler insisting on being a kitty cat EVERYWHERE we go. Seriously, it IS like herding cats!
-Just me in general these past few weeks. I'm feeling bad about myself by saying that---just stating the facts. And I am ok with being awkward
-In a weight class at the gym. We were supposed to be doing dips to build our triceps. My platform was not on right and I managed to make it slip... thus resulting in a loud CRASH and BANG followed by "Are you ok" from almost everyone.

Awesome:
-Finally having some order and cleanliness to my house
-Hubby being home, after being gone. It was just overnight but sheesh!
-Toddler going poo in the toilet!... just going poo in general to be more precise
-Christmas shopping, wrapping, mailing etc is ALL DONE!! Don't be offended if you don't get a card. Its probably because you don;t talk to me or you didn't send me one. And no, FB does not count as "talking" to me.

The Children of Israel

disclosure: This is probably one of those TMI posts but over the past week, I have spoken to many women who have or are feeling the same way. So I decided it was worth sharing.

Did you know it took the Children of Israel 40 YEARS to complete a journey that should have taken just 11 DAYS!

Well, I didn't know that until institute. I mean, I knew it should have been shorter but I didn't think DAYS! The question was posed: "What in my life is taking 40 years that should only take 11 days"

Weaknesses: I tend to get defensive. I also tend to want to think that my train of thought is right. And I also realized that I am not fully invested in quite a few things that I should be. Want some examples? FHE, school, budgeting, being happy, daily thoughtful scripture study etc....
Last week this came to a head. The Hubbs and I had a little argument ( i know, who argues with tier spouse ever?!) I felt those walls coming up and all the things I could say to him.

And then I didn't.

I remembered what I had learned and been mulling over in my mind the question posed from institute days before (yes, we are a bit odd and go to an institute class for our dates nights. I know you are jealous). I really felt like I needed to "check-in" with God. To see where I stood and what I needed to improve on. And there it was. I was being told the things I had prayed for. I was being told by someone who loves me so much. And maybe that it why it hurt a little. (actually I was mess but I will admit it was mostly from hormones, not hubbs) What he said was true and it was from someone who is supposed to love me no matter what. Like when I am rude. Short. Mean. Impatient. And Put everything else in the world before him.

But he does love me. No matter what. And that is why I knew I couldn't get defensive. I needed to listen with my spiritual ears. I needed to change. And this is what I needed to change sooner than later

It has been a week almost and the change has not come fast or easy. I have learned to bite my tongue. I have learned that when I am tired, hungry, in pain and stressed, I will be pretty cranky. So I just need to go to bed. Or eat. Or sit down and relax. Or all three :) I have learned that my needs are so different than others. I know, I am Captain Obvious here. I have also learned that somewhere I let my commitment to my spouse and daughter slip. It wasn't that I am not giving or kind, its just that I am giving and kind to everyone else first. So by the time I get around to my family, I have nothing left to give. Sound familiar? I am sure that most women have similar feelings. And in the past, I have felt them. But not like this. Not with this much force.

It seems that the children of Israel were given so much. It was all laid out for them. It is just so obvious! And this past week, it became painfully clear what weaknesses I have been blessed with. They keep my humble and dependent upon my Savior. And also help me to see that I am able to overcome them and make it to my promised land. And that brings me so much comfort and peace

And not wanting to leave on a downer, this is our first year being away from lots of family. That means it is finally our year to start creating our own traditions... taking things we love form both sides and blending. And, making new ones. I think that this cake is so on that list.

ps-on a side note, I am going to be disabling the comments starting in Jan. Blame it on the Children of Israel.

Awesome!
1. Surprising the Hubbs with a thanksgiving visit from his sister and family
2. Having more family come in for the Holiday
3. Going to one of my favorite places with my SIL
4. Playing our annual Kinect Tournament. The hubbs totally beat me. I blame it on the bun in the oven
5. Fall weather finally came to Houston!! And it is almost December
6. The YMCA. We signed up and we love it
7. Thanksgiving. YUMMMMM......
8. The Aloha 9 Video. Black and Yellow... black and yellow...
9. Buying groceries and saving 57% !!! Oh yeah! And yes, I did get all my guacamole for free
10. The speakers in Church on Sunday. And the Sunday School and RS Lessons. Just Amazing.

Awkward....
1. Getting everyone to go swimming at the Y only to realize I don't have a swim suit that fits. Enjoy the cold water!!!
2. Working out only to realize that truly I should break down and buy some maternity workout clothes. Pretty sure the children and men don't enjoy seeing my tummy hang out
3. Bringing queso to a family dinner only to realize it tastes,.... funny. That's the last time I use off-brand products for queso. Good thing I also brought hummus and pita chips
4. Realizing AFTER the guests all leave that my house wasn't really clean the whole time. Talk about super embarrassing!
5. Toddler saying "Good Job Mommy! You did it! You went Poo-poo!" in the public bathrooms
6. And speaking of poo's, apparently she has somehow caught on to poo-poo jokes. Ex: I want a POO POO drink! or "You are Mamma-POO POO!!! HAHAHAHAHA!!! Seriously?! When did that happen!!!
7. Taking my first spin class. (thank you Chris!) That was awesome. However, the way my bum feels is NOT awesome! I never want to sit down again
8. Spending 4 hours waiting for the Geek Squad to come install a TV. I had to wait in my car
9. Not awkward, but I swear I swear I spend at least 2 hours a day cleaning my little house. EVERY DAY!
10. Trying to re-connect with old friends. Pretty sure they must think I was a wierdo before and not much had changed since. " I PROMISE I AM COOL NOW!" :)

We went during the Scottish weekend. If you live here and haven't been, you got one weekend left!

Random shot but I made hubbs stand there while I took a photo. It really was so beautiful. And the toddler is in the "I need to copy Dad" stage. And yes, this is the wall to the wedding "chapel" and yes, there was a wedding taking place. Oh, and yes, they were all sorts of dressed up. Mostly in Kilts and fairy wings.

And we recommend going when it opens and leaving early.

And riding Dumbo of course.

After 10 kids, 5 grandkids (soon to be 8), and many many years, they are still happily married.

When the clock turned 11:11 am today I thought I would make it special.

I know, it is kinda silly. But it wont happen again. EVER.

Had a FAB turn out for the hubbs BYU ChemE Alumni lunch. I am really quite happy for him and the response he got.

Made homemade bread in my bread machine and I actually like it. A lot.

Made a substitute for butter in most recipes. Yep, its mostly just white beans and water. Thanks Mom

Got 40lbs of chicken this week. Canned 20lbs. Froze the other 20lbs. Gotta love Zaycon

Made laundry soap for .01 per "serving". Thank you Tina for that Pin.

Ahh, the weekend. Can. Not. Wait.

Toddler shut the bathroom door and got locked in. Similar experience to her getting locked in the car with my only set of keys in the ignition (minus the police). Hubby was right there to take the door handle off the bathroom door. She did end up being able to unlock it before he got too far.

I can't see my feet. At. All. I am measuring at 37" around. Pretty much everything is awkward and I still have until March

Toddler won't poo on the toilet. She will poo everywhere else... just not on the toilet.

Considering trying out cloth diapers for the new one.... haven't decided yet though. And it often occupies more of my thoughts than diapering in March should.

Waking up at 12midnight and 3:30am every night. For no real reason. I guess this is the little mans new schedule.

Everyone is sleeping and the house is quiet. It is nice. Very. Nice.
I have had lots of thoughts this week. Aside from the normal thoughts I mean. These are deep seeded thoughts. Well, they are taking root at least so we will see if it will turn into a beautiful garden or a disastrous jungle. And perhaps this is a post that should not be so publicly shared but, I feel like going public. So I am.

Some of my thoughts are along the lines of "I am a crappy mom" and "I could be a much better wife" and "Once again I fail at being a proper friend and sister and aunt and niece and granddaughter etc.... "

I think "I shouldn't lose my temper" and "I should cook healthier foods" and "So what if I am on my 5th kit kat!"

I also think "There is so much hurt in the world. Why?!" or "How can I be ok with bringing in a child into a world like ours?" and even "what is the future going to be for my daughter and son?"

it frightens me. War, food shortages, how the media is so NAUGHTY, and how to find peace in it all. But I do. I find peace. I am given moments of great happiness and remembrance of times where I know I am loved by my Savior.
Like at Girls Camp when I was 13 and lonely and awkward
In High School where I left the popular crowd as a sophomore becuase they were mean girls.
On my mission where I spent an hour in the shower late one night just sobbing
Or putting my screaming newborn on the floor to go back to the bedroom to pray and figure out why I wanted a child so much.

In these times I have felt so loved and cared for by my Heavenly Father and my Savior. And it didn't matter what happened in the future because it was these moments that carried my through the other really hard times

Like my first heartbreak. And second. And third.
Or not getting into the college I wanted
and having to uproot myself entirely twice in a 12 month period.

A few months ago was General Conference. I was expecting a sort-of-gloom-and-doom response. Instead, it was hope. So much hope and faith and confidence. One of my most favorites is from President Packer.

With all that is going on in the world, with the lowering of moral standards, you young people are being raised in enemy territory.

We know from the scriptures that there was a war in heaven and that Lucifer rebelled and, with his followers, “was cast out into the earth.”² He is determined to disrupt our Heavenly Father’s plan and seeks to control the minds and actions of all. This influence is spiritual, and he “is abroad in the land.”³

But despite the opposition, trials, and temptations, you need not fail or fear.

When I was 17, about ready to graduate from high school as a very average student with some handicaps, as I thought, everything around us came apart one Sunday morning. The next day we were called to the high school auditorium. On the stage was a chair with a small radio. The principal switched on the radio. We then heard the voice of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt as he announced that Pearl Harbor had been bombed. The United States was at war with Japan.

Later that scene was repeated. Again the voice of President Roosevelt, this time announcing that our country was at war with Germany. World War II had exploded across the world.

All at once our future was uncertain. We did not know what was ahead. Would we live to get married and have a family?

Today there are “wars and rumors of wars, and the whole earth [is] in commotion.”⁴ You, our youth, may feel uncertainty and insecurity in your lives. I want to counsel you and teach you and give you a warning about some things to do and some things not to do.

The gospel plan is “the great plan of happiness.”⁵ The family is the center of that plan.

You must learn to “trust in the Lord with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”¹⁵ You must be trustworthy and surround yourself with friends who desire to be likewise.

Sometimes you might be tempted to think as I did from time to time in my youth: “The way things are going, the world’s going to be over with. The end of the world is going to come before I get to where I should be.” Not so! You can look forward to doing it right—getting married, having a family, seeing your children and grandchildren, maybe even great-grandchildren.

If you will follow these principles, you will be watched over and protected and you yourself will know by the promptings of the Holy Ghost which way to go, for “by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.”¹⁶

What I wish for is perspective. For faith and hope. For the ability to go beyond myself and reach as my Savior has. I wish to remember how valued I am by those in my life and not let "Scrwetape" make me believe otherwise. There will always be trials, almost unbearable hardship, and suffering. I will most likely always not get everything done I want to or become the near-perfect anything. But that's ok. I think it is the journey that matters more. To know that my daughter sees me trying. That my husband trusts me. And that, above all, I matter to Him.

Goodbye October

I woke up on Nov 1 feeling very happy.
Happy that Oct was over. I don't know what it was about that month but it was nice to see it was over. I think I just felt really overwhelmed in so many aspects.

So far November has been great! I have:
1-finally gotten all but two boxes out of the house
2-researched family history using Ancestry.com
3-I made my family meal chart for the whole month using NOTHING but what I ALREADY HAVE in my pantry. You gotta check out this gals food storage cookbook site!
4-Tried some new recipes from Pinterest. Apple cider syrup and pumpkin waffles
5-Put away Halloween stuff
6- Hung up pictures, curtains, and completed some much needed projects
7- earned my mommy paycheck via a sick toddler

Not that October was a bad month.
It was good. very good. Birthdays, D.C, Dressing up.... i'm just glad it is over. Now I don't have to be an evil witch

Simple Things

I mentioned that we took off from the Republic of Texas and headed to our very own Nations Capitol last week. We both mentioned that we really miss it. I also had said that this trip really touched my soul. I really can't put it into words but I did make an executive choice that I want our children to go there when they turn 16 and be able to learn and think and reflect upon what this great nation of ours stands for and how it got there.

We did everything. We stayed at a nice hotel: Marriot Crystal City (thank you priceline) that connected us to the Metro by an underground shopping center. We saw almost all the monuments and got to visit with a dear, sweet friend who I just admire and adore. Anyhow, being our family journal and all let me caution that there are lots of pictures.

One thing that was hard for me was traveling with the toddler. Without a stroller. And short on diapers. Which made me short on patience.

But each night she would cuddle up and then the guilt set in: "I was too hard on her", " I am too strict", etc. And then I remember that kids need rules. They need boundaries. And just like our country, we all need a set of standards to live up to.

Ahh... escalators. Everywhere we went people would stop and say: your little girl is so beautiful. We even had a guy at the airport walk up to mckay to tell us that. Hmm... nice to know we make pretty babies

Smithsonian Air and Space. We pretty much went inside all of the museums. I was surprised at how interesting it all really was.

not a voo doo doll. This little lady was hand made by yours truly at Mt. Vernon. Being there it wasn't really hard to see why Washington gave up the life in DC. I could just spend all day there

and this... is Berlin. She is beyond description aside from saying that she is an angel on earth. No exageration

Library of Congress. The one other thing I wanted to see. Simply Breathtaking. Until the toddler decided to strip down dance in the center. I quickly got my breath back.

These machines give you the tickets to ride the Metro. I have to be honest here, I kinda felt like Harry potter and that i was going to the Ministry if Magic

Berlin took the toddler for few hours while we ran around Mt. Vernon. It was really inspiring to be there

and people aren't kidding about the squirrels! They are EVERYWHERE! And the LOVE people. Did you see his little booty? That little guy is one well fed animal

Awkward Thursday

Awkward:
1. Second time I have sneezed and tinkled in my pants.
2. Realizing that I apparently am a 1%... not the 99% that is protesting
3. Sharing with other ladies how great a brazilian is. Pretty sure they will never look at me the same way again
4. Sometimes, more recently than before, I get confused. For instance, I have managed to loose my car in the parking lot many times. Honestly, and there were only a dozen or so cars. Pretty certain when I am 80 I will be that crazy cat woman (not that there is anything wrong with being the crazy cat woman)
5. The toddler is catching on to the fact that there is a baby incubating inside me. She only seems to get the tummy confused with the "ta-ta's". It would make more sense if I were having twins.....
6. Speaking of the toddler, I got scolded for wearing one of her flowers in my hair. Hmm.. good thing I am the mom and can still convince her to let me have it. (wondering what it will be like in 10 years though)

Nope. I am not awkward. I am mostly utterly exhausted. Mentally and physically. Hello Zombie land, thank you for letting me in. I think I am going to stay awhile! (that was meant ti be witty but the way my witty-ness has been all week, it probably wasn't) But here is a picture of me and my dear, sweet, inspiring friend Jeppson. (and darling little boy)Well, her name is Stephanie but we go back to mission times so Jeppson it is. I have always admired her compassion and beauty and insight.

Awkward:
1. Thinking today is Wednesday. All day long. Even after I was told it was Thursday, I didn't believe it.
2. Public Speaking. Had to Emcee a RS activity on Tuesday. I think we can safely say that me up there talking was awkward for everyone
3. Yeup, I have a whole in my pants I am wearing today. Just noticed.
4. Returning items at a store only to be talked to in spanish. I think after 3 minutes the blank (and slightly annoyed) look on face finally dawned on the sales clerk. (yesum, I did get an D in Freshman Spanish)
Her: "No espanol"
Me: "nope".
And then the store wouldn't take back an item! For reals yo?! GRRRR!!! It just added to the fact that I am ALWAYS spoken to in spanish. I am HAWAIIAN!!!! Yes, I am brown, I am fully aware of that. But seriously! If it is not on the Taco Bell menu, I can't say it. Can you just please talk in English to me ESPECIALLY if you work in a public place!
5. Venting about #4 and hoping no one is offended.

Awesome:

This summer we spent about a month in UT. One of the things we did that I had never done before was Wheeler Farm. We loved it! One of the best parts was inside the gift shop. These little babies are all different types of candy... for .5!! Yes! So cheap! And they had the nostalgia candy... the kind that takes you back to being 8 years old and getting .25 to buy any candy at the corner store after passing your level in swim lessons. .25 cents bought a lot back then. lemonheads, bakedbeans.. you name it!
I was so happy I got to relive that memory and share it with my family

*A lot of people commented on my "dress" in the last photo. It is a shirt. Blame it on the camera angle

*Cleaning the bathroom wondering if there is a dog that lives here I am not aware of. I'm talking about some SERIOUS hair shedding happening 'round here peeps.

*Watching the hubbs play flag football. (awesome). Then watching the toddler pee in her brown leggings and run away. I thought about chasing her but thought that it would be pointless. She eventually got hungry and came to me for food. Don't judge me. YOU try chasing that girl. I changed her after.

*Trying to talk to a business about a service all the while trying to not inhale the entire cigarette being blown in my face.

*Realizing that the only time I shave lately is when I am going to the OB/GYN. Apparently I have become THAT woman.

AwsoMe:

*Typing awesome with a capitol A and M. I feel like I am 15 again. And I like it

*Decorating for Halloween. I know, it has been in the 90's here. But between the decor and the pumpkin scentsy it feels like fall inside

*Getting some rain. Need more. Keep praying.

*Scripture study at 6 am with the hubbs. Although he is much more alert than I am.

*Being hot here still, sometimes you just need to go topless. And bottomless as well for that matter

Mommy thoughts: Paychecks

Have you read this talk yet? I am sure you have. But if it has been a while, by all means, click on over and have a sit. Then you can come back and thank me. I'll wait.

The reason for my post is simply this,

"His (hubbs) paycheck comes often. Hers (momma) may come a few times in her life. And now perhaps, because of the choice of a child, one check may not come at all."

If you have ever had a way ward friend, or relative, you know how badly it can hurt. It hurts that they no longer believe in God. It hurts what they say and what they do. And it hurts to know that sometimes, that relationship may need to be put on hold for a while. My mother has a daughter that is. And as her sister, it just breaks my heart into a million pieces. The itty-bitty kind that are really hard to see. You can imagine what my prayers are like.

But,

I have this little girl and this great guy. I love them more than the world. And I know that there are choices each person must make in their own lives. But I also know that I am going to do my best to make every single moment count. That, my friends, is my duty and my honor. I can't do more than my very best every day.

Unfortunately, sometimes my best every day is hard to muster. And then I feel loads of guilt. Guilt for the dirty laundry, for working, for not being patient enough or that my prayers and scripture study are done simply out of obedience rather than desire. And I have to remind myself that God knows my heart. My Savior heals all wounds. And at the end of the night, for now at least, my paycheck comes with a hug and kiss and three songs sung to me before I am ordered to be by my toddler. Yes, she tells to go to bed now.

I know this post is probably a little scattered but I have had so many thoughts about motherhood recently. Well, just about my role as a woman. It started with this quote:

Green with envy much? You better be! :) This was such a treat. I got to spend the better part of a day with 4 extremely talented women and got to be spoiled in the process. Don't you fret my pet, I have some goodies to share with you as well. Yeah, I'm just nice like that.

After spending not nearly enough time here, we headed down the street to Flour Girls and Dough Boys. This place is perfect for any occasion. I walked in about layed down right n the floor just overcome with all the yummy smells. And that was just the start! There was a cute little room reserved for us to enjoy our lunch.

After eating and laughing we were treated to just not one, but a PLATE FULL of treats. The mint brownie was the best mint brownie I have ever had. EVER.

So aren't you green with envy that you couldn't make it? The fun doesn't stop there though.

Have you heard of Proof? I hadn't until a few months ago and boy oh boy, am I BIG fan. Don't I look just runway ready?!

Proof Sunglasses are made out of wood. Yep. wood. You ready right. They use the proceeds from their sells to plant trees on Haiti, help provide eye protection for recipients of eye surgery in India, and because they are made from wood, they are good for the environment. I think the biggest surprise though was how comfortable they were. I forgot I even had them on.

Awkward Thursday

I turned 29. It was mostly awesome.
-Breakfast in bed
-Lunch with surprise guests
-New clothes
-Painting from my MIL of the Toddler
-Salad for dinner (fresh from the garden)
-Opening of Etsy store
-Hubby sending me flowers from ProFlowers

But there have been awkward moments:
-Having gas at D.I. Way too many people to find a spot "out of the way". Gas hurts when you hold it
-Getting money shoved in my bra. Although it was $10 so that was nice
-Having $1 ice cream from Maverics and trying to eat it all before it melts. Note: Vanilla is WAY better than Huckleberry-whatever-tart-cream flavor
-Thinking I took more pictures than I did and wondering what happened to them

Some weeks I feel worlds more awkward than awesome. But THIS week, well THIS week is not one of those weeks.

Awesome:
1-Finally feeling more balanced in my life... pretty sure it is a direct link to reading my scriptures more
2-Surprising my in-laws with ME! (and the toddler) Two weeks ahead of schedule.
3-Getting out of the heat of Houston. My mantra for the past 3 months has been "please bless that rain my fall on these here dry plains". Hasn't happened but I am enjoying the summer in Utah
4-Toddler decided to tell me when she needs to use the toilet again. Potty training back in track!
5-Getting to hang out with Robbie. My oh so cool little brother
6- Seven days of birthdays started yesterday. I love this week
7-Getting to be part of a very Magical Harry Potter Party
8- Cut through A LOT of red tape this week. Tentative move in date: Next week
9- Decided on a new personal slogan for the next little bit: It is what it is. Inspired by the Hubbs
10- Got BEAUTIFUL bracelets from the Farleys via Matt's trip to the Philippines and The Janitor Book from the cool little bro. Sweet.... made it to 10 without even breaking a sweat

Awkward:
1-Running to catch my plane. Second to last person on
2-Not having ice cream at all this week... pretty sure that alone will make me way more awkward if it continues
3-Going to the water park w/o another adult. Not really awkward but just hard especially when said toddler wants to go on the big water slides by herself. Two adults VS one toddler is SO MUCH EASIER than one on one.

Awkward:
1. Doing this post and pretending it is THURSDAY rather than FRIDAY.
2. STILL waiting for lawyers and red tape in order to move into our home. Bleh
3. I used to like Mondays. Until Monday. This was a really rotten Monday
4. Hubby: Did you know your car stinks. Me: Like what? Hubby: Moldy diapers or something.
Yeah... that is smell that has proved impossible to find the cause of AND to get rid of.
5. Not wearing a bra. All day. In public places too. Although, pretty sure I am little enough that it doesn't matter. In my defense, i was in a hurry and sorta forgot about it. Now, don't you judge me!

Awesome:
1. We have been invited to a Harry Potter Party tomorrow. Oh, you JUST WAIT for the pictures. You will be amazed
2. It's not monday!
3. Packing boxes that we didn't have to pay for. Those babies are expensive!
4. My daughter loves Word Girl. Ever watch that? I love Word Girl too. I always knew she was my fav daughter
5. Selling all of our violins.

On occasion, I read the Sunday Funnies in the Newspaper to get a few chuckles (being an engineer, Dilbert is always a fave). Thanks to the guys over at Baby Blues, I got a little more out today.

After I read it , I thought to myself, "self, I need to do a lot better at building my wife's confidence up, especially because there are so many forces constantly telling her that she isn't quite good enough. And let's be honest, she (like almost all women I know), already is hard enough on herself without all that extra crap as it is. That's why I think the work that my sister is doing is so admirable over on her "because she does" feature. However, as Kirkman and Scott correctly point out, the husband can have the greatest influence over his wife's self confidence by saying a kind word or two a day instead of adding to the negative that is already there. So anyway, it's just a great reminder to us husbands out there. Maybe I'll follow my brother's example and do my own weekly feature about why my wife is so great. (doubtful though, I'm not disciplined enough)

To New Orleans!
We flew to New Orleans during the middle of this week. And it was so beautiful. Everything was so green. Like Smurfs. But not blue. Green. We were mostly there for biz-ness but managed to throw in a little pleasure. Unfortunately, due to rush hour traffic and my un-awesome navigation skills, no beignets were to be consumed. I am still pretty upset about that. I know, it's stupid. But have you had them?! Then you know why I am still a little upset over the matter.

I know. I am tired. Is it obvious. I started a new position and I am going 5 days a week now. And it just makes me tired. And packing. And laundry. And cooking. And I need ice cream and we don't have any.
Awkward:
Realizing I have lots of these moments and I really do need to keep track of them
Leaving my keys in the hubbs car... again... so he has to drive all the way back home from work to give them to me.
Trying to convince the hubbs that i really am I good navigator on road trips. Only to miss out exit for the THIRD time during rush hour traffic and an accident. Bleh.
What I am wearing right now. at this moment. It is not even close to matching.
The toddler telling me I taste like chicken. Weird.

Awesome:
What I am wearing right now. At this moments. I like that I sorta don't care
Flying to New Orleans for the day. And seeing Oak Alley Plantation
Packing. Tiresome but so refreshing to get things done and thrown away.
The people in my life. I really have been blessed by family close and great friends.

I am a day late on posting my simple things. I am aware of that. But sometimes I accidently fall asleep after church for 3 hours and that makes me pretty much very sleepy for the rest of the day. Which then ensures that dinner consists of whatever one can make for themselves. And I am pretty sure I should have know since the toddler is in an all boots-all the time stage.

And sometimes we end up having conversations like this the next day which makes it all worth it:me: remember when you promised to bring me flowers all the time?hubbs: well.... (thinking....) you lose everything I give youme: (true) BUT... you said everything. That is a blanket statement. You can't say blanket statementshubbs: are you really getting mad?me: no. this is me trying to flirt (and truly I was. it is just hard when there is a big computer-hutch-divider in the way)hubbs: well, I think about giving you flowers. It is the thought that countsme: (he knows I really don not agree with this statement) ...well then why don't you just write a dozen notes saying they are flowers then! .... and then we laugh. Time to reveal all the embarrassing things this week!
Awkward:
1. Like going around for who-knows-how-long not realizing that the button over my ta-ta's was UN-buttoned.
2. I got my wisdom teeth pulled 2 weeks ago. But today I ate some beef jerky. Apparently a little piece decided it wanted to stay in my mouth... where one of my wisdom-filled teeth used to reside. Y'know when you have just a little thing in your mouth and that IS ALL YOU CAN CONCENTRATE ON!!!
3. not awkward but hard: The toddler not napping for three days. result: crying by both mom and baby.
4. Thinking I killed a cock-roach the size of a car only to have it crawl up my hand

Awesome:
1. I have something to say but you will have to wait a week or two... it's exciting!

There has been A LOT of news about Mormons in the news. Even Buisnessweek did a really great article on us as well as CNN. And I wanted to stand up (not literally as that would make typing hard) and say that I am a mormon. Actually, we prefer the term LDS or Latter-Day Saint. I am not one to speak up or out about my beliefs although I did serve a 18 month LDS mission. It was in Omaha Nebraska. And it was pretty awesome if I do say so myself. It changed me in ways that I cannot explain. I came to know my Savior so much more.
One of my favorite little ladies is Sam from Young People in Love. And her cutie mister filmed this. You can find out more by going here And in case you are wondering, we are NOT a cult and NOT polygamists.
We believe in Christ as our Savior, the Bible, the Book of Mormon and Prophets today.

Now, IF this was a conversation with a girl it would go like this:

imaginary girl: I was JUST gonna say that I love it! Nectarine Mint is my favorite. It smells so good!
me: I know! I had never tried it before. I usually get the self-foaming but I thought I would try this one
imaginary girl: I love the self- foaming. Have you tried the.....

It is these little conversations in my head that send me into giggle-fits. Because, really, why does one need a 5 minute conversation about soap?

hubbs: Can you hear her?

me: no, whats up?
hubbs: did you teach her to say B-Y-POOPOO (not BYU)
me: **laughing really hard picturing the toddler say this a lot to a huge BYU fan** nope. I usually go for BYU Hawaii

this week was filled was cleaning, begin stages of packing and trip to the circus!

even with the lights and colors and sounds of the circus, I think the toddlers favorite part was running around

I have yet to meet a single person who doesn't enjoy July 4th. It is by far my favorite holiday. I love the colors, the sounds, smells and most of all, a day to think about the sacrifices given long ago and today for my freedom. With that on my mind, as I went into to watch Transformers: Dark side of the Moon, I may have been the ONLY one crying. Why? You ask. Well apparently you don't know me and you are not aware that I cry a lot about nothing really.

Actually, the beginning of the movie shows Neil Armstrong walking on the moon and I was filled (over-filled) with such gratitude for the way Americans banded together. And that made me sad since it is not the case today. I cried again as ~~Boy Meets World Star~~ fought to get his love back and once more at the end when Chicago is utterly destroyed and yet there is STILL such pride to be an American... to have fought for Freedom.

I know, it's silly. But I was proud to be part of Country that values freedom. God Bless America. And may God also bless Pheonix today and in the days following

Shaved ice is VERY different from Snow-cones. Now I am not talking about the crunchy kind where all the syrup goes to the bottom. Shaved ice is very different. Its... well I think it has to be what every frozen drop of water hopes to transformed into. And if you have every visited hawaii and had shaved ice there, then you know exactly what I am talking about.

The hubbs and I really have reasons to feel so blessed. But I am not going to go all sappy.

That is what hallmark cards are for. But it is Father's day so here is a little praise to our

dads and to all the dad throughout our family tree.

And especially to the dad of my own daughter.

The thing with dad's is that for the most part,

they go to work and do what they do because of their love for their own family.

1. Planning to go to the mall only to realize that AFTER we got all ready to go I didn;t have my car seat. THEN dealing with a screaming 2 3/4year old while neighbors peek outside their doors.

2. Having my hall lined with my food storage after a mad rampage to kill a certain texas-sized bug that crawled into the dark food storage room. It took seconds to toss everything out. Its been 4 days and I still have yet to put everything back

3. Old and extra fat men in speedos. That is never awesome

4. Meeting new friends at the splash pad only to realize afterwards that my swim coverup had snot on the shoulder. And it was not recent.

5. ... sitting here for 15 minutes wondering what I can put as my last awkward moment. I think this is it

Awesome:

1. Getting a surprise of TREAT Cupcakes. Make that two. I love friends that know how to win my loyalty.

2. Starting to train for my half-marathon... again.

3. Price-matching PLUS couponing to get incredible prices on groceries this week.

4. My BIL coming home from the Philippines from a business trip and bringing me a new purse!

Madonna inspired Mommy Thoughts

I am not quite sure where this post is going so bare with me. It has been on my mind for a bit. Did you know there are TWO national turn of TV events each year?

I spent last week virtually disconnected from the internet. Want to know what I did? Of course you do

I read.

I wrote thank you notes

I played

I took pictures to prove I was being a good mom

having fun in the sprinklers. This went on and on for HOURS!

Now this week the hubbs car is in the shop so I am home-bound for a week. What have I done?

I ran

I de-cluttered

I made yummy treats with my daughter

I wrote to old friends

I made new friends

I napped

I spent a LOT of time with my daughter playing in her world

There is so much "noise" in our lives. And I worry that it is growing louder and louder. No longer is it just static. It is a full on attack against the family and the core-beliefs of Christendom. And that gets my goat. I was listening to one of my favorite speakers John Bytheway called Turn off the TV and get a life. (You can download it for free). And he pointed out this comment by Masonna

I guess I am just tired of it all. The tweets, The facebook, the lack of real conversation and deep thought in Teenagers, the way testing words have become part of "normal" face to face conversation. We really do not watch a lot of TV in our house. We don't have netflix or cable. We don't have shows that we have to watch. And I bet that this is actually pretty accurate for many people as well.It makes me wonder "What is the point of TV"

Actually, just after hearing the talk I went through and tossed all my PG 13 movies. I really don't need to hear my Lords Name used in Vain and in anger. I don't need to watch other people making love. I don't need to see teenagers seeking abortion when there are millions of families who would take them as their own. TV tells me I am not good enough. That being a SAHM is easy and a cop-out. That I need the new iPad. That I need to be better, faster, thinner. You know what?! I know that already!!! I know I need to be better. And I am working on it.

By writing thank you notes that are long over due

By reading to my little girl until she falls asleep

By trying to patch pants and sew seams

By learning new things from free classes to make me a better me

By going to bed early and rising early and eating healthier

By giving my husband the love and attention he needs throughout the day

And most of all, By serving my Lord by doing what He asks me to do.

And here is the thing. I don't feel overwhelmed. I don't feel inadequate. I feel really good about myself. We still watch TV each day. Just a little bit in the morning on PBS. But I no longer listen to music that is not in line with God. I don't watch things that desecrate the Lords name. I want my daughter to figure out who she is without the influences of Hollywood. I want our home to be totally safe, a real refuge from the world.

I figured it out.

If I am super lazy all week, read a book series instead of doing anything actually productive, then at the end of the week I come up with a good idea!

Go ahead. Try it.

But you will have to get used to eating cereal without milk. Yes, you read that right, I was enjoying my week of not doing anything at all too much to buy milk. It could have been worse.

And there are so many uses for CD sleeves besides actually using them for storing cds!

but stay away from ice cream. Not that ice cream is a bad idea... just when you put it in a cd sleeve it is.

awesome:

1. having to wear a sweatshirt bc it is so very cold... inside my "vacation home". it is triple digits here folks

2. staying up till 1am with a good book

3. then getting to take a 4 hour nap in the middle of the day

4. watching a 2 year old all week. I'm being sarcastic folks. It has been awesome.

5. going to the hospital to visit w my friend and wash her hair.

awkward:

1. realizing that i read aloud the verification "words" when I comment on someones post

2. realizing that since I have been lazy all week I have not worn a bra (although i think that goes under awesome). Until unexpected people show up wanting to talk. Then I wonder "I hope i put on deodorant"

3. not awkward, just bad: internet crashing

4. but realizing that for some reason the iPad is still getting internet so my two-year old nephew eagerly shows me how to use it.

5. watching " I am Number Four" after telling hubbs it was really good. Then realizing it is just ok and we wasted 2 hours. I could have watched Hawaii Five-0.

The thing about traveling is that coming back home is a bit of a bummer.

Awkward:

1. Almost losing the hubbs over the cliff (actually on of my fav pictures bc it was totally candid)

2. Being told that the guy I was staring at is Jack Johnson. Then whispering to NOT shout out to him so we don't look like freakish-stalker-tourists. Then wishing I had. Hubbs is right, again.

3. Trying to sleep in today but having the toddler pour milk on my head. Seriously? How did she even get that?!

4. Talking to a stranger with very very bad breath. Thinking " I really should tell them"

5. Ending up on a booze-cruise cleverly disguised as a sunset cruise

Awesome:

1. My new Sister Ashlee and her downright lovable family

2. Teds Chocolate Hupia pie

3. Finally meeting Cheryl. Everyone should meet Cheryl

4. The hubbs saying yes to everything I asked for on vaca. Even Spam Musibi and Nori Rice crackers

well, you get the point. So, I will just take it one little post at a time.

We spent 8 hours at Sea-Tac., ugh. Hate layovers.

hate trying to sleep even more. But hubbs managed.

We made it to Oahu (finally, after being awake for 30 hours)

Luckily the gal at the rental car took pitty on us

and asked if we would like to upgrade to a convertible. (I think she could read my mind)

She told us it would be only a few dollars more

Hubbs: "How much more?

Lady: "just $106 more."

Hubbs: "No thanks"

Lady: "Ok, how about I'll just upgrade you for free then?"

Hubbs and me: ....speechless.... "yes!"

We then headed to meet my Bro and SIL. Love them

I have heard a LOT about Chinas Wall and wanted to jump off it.

But the waves were in control and that means I didn;t get to go.

So we did the next best thing. We took a picture....

I will say I REALLY wanted to see this though

but the only show times were late late late :(

we tried to got o the pool or spa but it was closed.

so we had a little hawaiian dance show (I am part Hawaiian ya'know)
